Miller Avenue’s Environmental Advocates

3 students showing their projects thumbnail265843

Miller Avenue students put their creativity to work crafting vibrant “Earth Day Every Day” posters, ready to inspire the school community to embrace eco-conscious habits. The second graders in Alice Steinbrecher’s class also embarked on the “Great Miller Avenue Clean-up!”

With enthusiasm, the young environmentalists scoured the school grounds, proudly collecting over four pounds of litter. Rounding out their efforts, they created a compost area just outside their classroom, providing a practical way to recycle organic waste and enrich our learning environment.

“It was truly rewarding to take tangible action, knowing we were making a positive impact on our planet and our school environment,” Mrs. Steinbrecher said.

Miller Avenue School’s Science Fair on April 9 was a huge success. Thank you to Dr. Stadler and her students from St. Joseph's University who provided Miller Avenue students and families with interactive activities. Thanks to parent and Brookhaven National Laboratory employee Mr. Sowinski for setting up an interactive tabletop activity and thanks to our student judges from the high school.

This year students and families got creative with interactive Lego and a makerspace building table.

New Coding Challenges for Miller Avenue Students

Miller Avenue School K-2 students learned some exciting new coding challenges using Indi robot vehicles. thumbnail265590

Miller Avenue School K-2 students learned some exciting new coding challenges using Indi robot vehicles.

Library Media Specialist Brittany LaValle and Eastern Suffolk BOCES Models School Coach Carrie McGuire worked with the students in the library to supplement their computer science skills. The engaging activity challenged the young scientists to complete a code sequence to create a square path around a classmate and – a more advanced level – to complete a code sequence to create an infinite loop.

The activities encouraged collaborating, problem-solving and computational thinking skills among the students.
