Nine Honored with Seal of Biliteracy Awards

The Shoreham-Wading River School District Board of Education recognized nine students with the Seal of Biliteracy award – a formal recognition of attaining a high proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.

Students Katelyn Roberts, Caroline D’Andrea, Nicholas Dean, Morgan Lesiewicz, Emma Losee, Kerrin McGuire, Michael McMullen, Mery Macias and Patrick Shea were honored for proficiency in Spanish and English.

The students were introduced by District Director of Humanities Mrs. Nicole Waldbauer at the June 10 Board of Education meeting. Mrs. Waldbauer shared the significance of the honor and presented each student with award certificates and medallions. The students will also have a special notation in the graduation program and on their official high school transcript, as well as a special seal placed on their graduation diploma.

Seal of Civic Readiness Honorees

The Shoreham-Wading River School District honored seven seniors with the New York State Education Department’s Seal of Civic Readiness at the June 10 Board of Education meeting.

The Seal of Civic Readiness is a special distinction on a high school transcript and diploma. It recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in civic knowledge, civic mindset, civic skills and civic experiences.

The goals of the initiative include exemplifying a commitment to participatory government, civic responsibility and civic values as well as demonstrating to universities, colleges and future employers that they have completed an action project in civics or social justice.

Congratulations to Grace Barra, Sean Casey, Giovanna Costa, Nicholas Dean, Connor DiMasi, Carolyn Panasci and Savannah Roth.

Shoreham-Wading River High School inducted 31 students as the inaugural members of the National English Honor Society.

Under the leadership of English teacher Brendan Gilley, The NEHS was founded this year to celebrate the academic abilities of students and to spark their passion for the English language arts.

Shoreham-Wading River High School shares in the mission of cultivating a vibrant environment where students and teachers can immerse themselves in the invaluable experiences of promoting literacy and serving society, while honoring exceptional and diverse achievements in the English language arts and related subjects.

Shoreham-Wading River High School’s Criminal Justice class finished off the semester with a demonstration from Suffolk County Police Department’s K9 Unit Police Officers Ralph Demasi and Mark Sacco along with K9 Valor. The students and teacher Ruth Squillace viewed the dog in action with the two officers outside the school building on June 12.

Shoreham-Wading River High School Principal Frank Pugliese honored 18 seniors who completed Career and Training courses at BOCES at the June 10 Board of Education meeting.

The students were congratulated for completing a one- or two-year rigorous course of study earning each of them an industry standard credential within their given field. Mr. Pugliese applauded them for successfully attending BOCES classes in addition to their SWR course work.
