Students in Shoreham-Wading River High School’s Long Island Sustainability class and science teacher Mr. Kevin Nohejl visited Wading River School recently to share their knowledge on hydroponics with fifth grade students.

Paul Ganci and Karla Roberts’ students welcomed Michael Clemente, Kaylee Colantropo, Jake Heins, Robert Portelli, Noah Ricciardi, Cole Wetzel and Jarrell Winston to their classrooms where they had pre-grown seedlings of cucumbers, lettuce, peas, spinach and tomatoes ready to place in the classroom vertical grow towers.

The older students highlighted some of the differences between hydroponics and traditional farming and important criteria between the two including efficiency and yield, environmental impact, seasonal dependency, and water and resource usage. The younger students then helped to take their seedlings and transplant them into the grow towers.

The cross-grade collaboration was an opportunity for students to develop literacy, social skills and confidence and to highlight the high school course that teaches students about sustainable practices, local farming heritage and career paths in agriculture.

The White Rabbit was not late for a very important date when he and his fellow fifth grade student actors showed up at the Feb. 11 Board of Education meeting. The 12 students were just a portion of the many who were on stage this past weekend for Wading River School’s SRO performance of “Alice in Wonderland, Jr.”

The catchy tunes “How d’ye do and shake hands” and “Painting the Roses Red” were followed by the White Rabbit’s famed lines to the applause of all in attendance at the meeting.

Principal Lou Parrinello introduced director and music teacher Mark Verity, who in turn introduced each student – Rebecca Baas, Isabella Bernardino, Sophia Bucco

Jaymes Deeds, Gianna DiSilvestre, Olivia Figueroa, Brendan Johnson, Megan Joos

Maddelena LaGrassa, Gianna Leibrock, Aidan Thomas and Elliot Thomas. Thanks to them for their gifts as well as Mr. Verity and assistant directors Kimberly DiPaola and Melissa Levonick for helping to bring out their talents!

Connection, celebration and camaraderie were the catchwords for the Shoreham-Wading Rive School District ENL Family Night on Feb. 10.

Special Valentine’s crafts, a Polaroid photo booth, pizza, drinks and desserts from the recent PTO/PTA fundraiser were part of the festivities.

Hosted by ENL teachers Brendan Gilley, Jenny Hoey, Marcie O’Donnell and Marisa Zambrano and Director of Humanities Nicole Waldbauer, the event included a presentation on how love is celebrated around the world, with several students joining in and sharing their cultural celebrations.
